TRIP TO CLOUD 9 ANYONE?

If the words “Cloud Nine” evoke sensual or funny images, or draws a chocolate bar in your mind… pause… click delete, and quickly, empty the garbage bin! This has nothing to do with those images and believe me, I am not hallucinating. It is real. Cloud 9 is a place, on Earth - this Earth where we all live in.

Actually, it is a village in the town of Gen. Luna in the Island of Siargao in Surigao del Norte – a small strip known in the world of surfers around the globe as the place where they can find that “thick hollow tube.”
Excuse me, but first, I’d like to make sure that everybody understands that we are not talking about some drainage pipe around here.
Now that we are all in agreement, let me continue by saying that the name (Cloud 9) was believed to have been coined by John S. Callahan, an American photographer who published a story about Siargao Island in a US-based magazine, Surfer, in 1993. Travelling surfers however discovered the area that produces those waves (that I presume looked like the number 9) in the late 80’s
That place soon became the site of the “Siargao Cup" a local and international surfing competition. And the island became known as the Surfing Capital of the Philippines.

Well, if you are not that much into surfing, let’s say you are just tagging along, but you love the beaches, serene, forested surroundings and you don’t want to spend a vault of fortune on your vacation, then Cloud 9 could just be the heaven you are looking for.
Here’s an idea on how you can get there: Take a one and a half hour domestic flight from Manila to Butuan City. Hitch a bus ride to Surigao City then sail on a ferry boat to Siargao. From the port, a van can take you to Cloud 9 in Gen. Luna town.
Hotels and resorts abound in the area. You can make you choices when you get there. But of course, it would be better if you can arrange a booking before leaving your place of origin.
