THE MAN WHO WILL BE PRESIDENT?

His father was the senator who was assassinated by people believed to be associated with then Philippine strongman Ferdinand E. Marcos. His father's assassination resulted to the world's first bloodless People's Power Revolution. The revolt that brought down the 20 year rule of Marcos dictatorship.

As a consequence of that revolution, his mother, Corazon C. Aquino, a simple, plain, housewife, became the first woman Philippine President.

She wasn't able to do much as President, except for restoring democracy in the country (which is no mean feat) and by becoming an icon as an honest and unselfish leader (which was a lot more than any politician can ever be).

When they died, both his parents are considered by many as heroes of the republic. She died after a long bout with cancer.

Of their five children, he is the only son and he is the only one who entered politics. As a politician, he became a congressman and later on a senator, but he is not as remarkable, as fiery, as intelligent or as sterling as his father.

When his father died and was brought to his final resting place, the country have seen the biggest outpouring of support never before seen by the Filipinos. It was equaled only by the number of people who joined the funeral procession that led to his mother's grave.

It was his mother's wish that her kids will continue the legacy that she and her husband have left behind.

Before she died, around twelve politicians have already announced (or have indicated) their desire to run for the presidency. Many of them have already spent hundreds of millions of pesos in personal ads to promote themselves as the best presidential candidate.

After she died, and after somebody have cooked up the idea that her son, Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino, jr. (who, like his mother, has not even entertained the idea of becoming president) would be the best presidential candidate, at least four of those who initially indicated their desire to run abandoned their dreams and disregarded the money already spent and have thrown their support to Noynoy's candidacy.

Everybody seem to believe that because of his simplicity, honesty and integrity he is going to be the best president this country could ever have.

There are, of course, those who see him as too simple, too honest and too malleable to be president.

An unlikely aggroupation of people have descended and are pushing for his candidacy – you'd wonder if this country have suddenly become a nation of saints!

Noynoy himself, along with most of his siblings, are not very keen on seeing him run for the highest position of the land. But the pressure was on him. He went on a retreat for discernment and announced his decision today.

Now, is he the man who should be the President?

Or is he the president who will just spend the rest of his term fending off the biggest enemies of the state – who may turn out to be his closest political allies?

As I already said many times before, I hate politics (and I can't see the future).

I hope the millions of Filipino overseas workers who will cast their absentee-votes by May next year will see the light themselves.
