PLACE FOR NEW SURFERS
August 4th 2008 00:00
We cannot all be born an expert, but all things must start from somewhere. So if, you are not a born surfer (as in you are already a surfer even before they cut your umbilical cord) and, you want to survive your first attempt for an exhilarating experience on the surf board why not do it in Bagasbas?
Here you get 3-4 feet waves on normal days and up to 8 ft waves when a strong weather condition is developing somewhere near.
Bagasbas is a shoreline village in the town of Daet, Camarines Norte, where the waves are tirelessly lapping at the beach, practically 24/7. Not a day in a year when the wind from the sea is not hissing on the tree tops and the water just simply swaying along. The surge and the swells are not as big as those in Siargao (previous post), but they are always there.
Daet is around three hundred (300) kilometers south of Manila. Air-conditioned buses ply the area. Because of the winding roads that characterize the route leading to the Province of Camarines Norte, travel time could extend up to seven (7) hours. The distance from Daet to Bagasbas is merely 4 kms and there are plenty of tricycles that can bring you there in about ten (10) minutes.
If you hate the idea of waking up far away from the sea and would rather spend those ten minutes paddling with your hands on top of your surf boards to meet with the waves, there are rooms that you can rent very close to the beach.
And if those waves do not sap your energy during the day, Bagasbas is also beginning to be known for some night activities. But don’t bring the kids along at night if you are planning to booze it up.
Even the small airport is in this village. So, if you arrive by air and you are able to book an accommodation in one of the few hotels here, you’ll just be walking distance to the beach.
If you are into festivals as well, you’d want to come here on the summer months in time for their “Pinyasan” Festival and partake of their sweet Formosa Pineapple variety and the accompanying festivities.
