ONE POINT FOR TEODORO

In a country with a multi-party system, where practically anybody who can scrawl and find his way to a polling place can file a certificate of candidacy and run for president, it’s wise to know who your candidate really is.
That is, if you have not filed your own certificate of candidacy for president.
As of this writing, there are already about Fifty (50), yes Fifty people who filed their certificates of candidacy for the presidency. That number includes the cousins, Noynoy Aquino and Gilbert Teodoro.
Noynoy’s number one (1) qualification, of course, is that he is the son of the late Senator Ninoy Aquino and the late President Corazon Aquino. Both are being considered Hero of the republic. Other than that, he is a so-so senator and a former so-so congressman.
Even after he has filed his certificate of candidacy as standard bearer of Liberal Party, he is more popularly known as the brother of Actress Kris Aquino. He was never visible as a politician, nobody remembered where he was during the onslaught of Typhoon Ondoy and Typhoon Pepeng, and there was not even a squeak from him after the Maquindano massacre where 57 people were killed, including 30 journalists.
Oh, there was an Aquino that brought in a lot of relief goods to the typhoon victims thru her brilliance as a Telethon host.
But that was Actress Kris Aquino not Noynoy – who must really believe that the presidency belongs to him because he is twice the son of a hero. And, of course, it doesn’t hurt that many research firms keep coming out with survey results that says he is the leading presidential candidate beating everyone else by at least a mile!
And believe me, he hasn’t done anything yet. It’s like, the only public appearance he has done so far was to act as sponsor to the wedding of his former girlfriend (Korina Sanchez) to his vice-presidential running mate Mar Roxas, and even before that, he was already topping the polls. Geeez, this guy must be a real “señorito”, everything has to be given to him on a silver platter – including the presidency!
Sure, there are claims that Noynoy has done this and done that for the typhoon victims. But like they always say: “when a tree in the forest falls and nobody saw or heard it fall, did it really fall?”
Now, Girlbert Teodoro has his own credentials, naturally. Former Congressman, former Defense Secretary, Harvard graduate, etc. He was at the bottom of every survey that shows his cousin as the leading candidate. Yet, Teodoro (as head of the National Disaster Coordinating Council) was working like horse (sometimes without sleep) during the onslaught of Typhoon Ondoy and Typhoon Pepeng and every time there is a natural calamity that threatens to create damage and chaos to this country.
But I don’t mind really. I thought both cousins are the same, wealthy scions who think they have inherent claim to the country’s “throne” – a right - like it is in their blood to rule this country…
Until the Maguindanao massacre happened.
Until Teodoro asked for the expulsion of the Ampatuans from the Lakas – Kampi - CMD party.
Well, you have to know who the Ampatuans are in Maguindanao (if not the whole of Mindanao) to appreciate the implications of what Teodoro has done. But here’s a hint. One has to have balls to do what he did.
Words that I hear from Mindanao say that the Ampatuans are taking on even the MILF and the terrorist group Abu Sayaff every time they try to enter the Ampatuans’ lair. In this country, the government’s armed forces, is the only other group that has the capabilities to do that.
Most of all, however, the Ampatuans are the ones believed to have delivered the winning votes for Mrs. Arroyo in the last presidential elections.
The Ampatuans have already been expelled from the party. For that, I am giving Teodoro one point advantage over his cousin.
