A CALL FOR HELP

September 28th 2009 09:10
If you are a Filipino, you have probably heard about it by now. Typhoon Ondoy (International codename: Ketsana) has flooded most of Metro Manila over the weekend (Sept. 25, 26, 27) and it wasnt “picky”. It affected all strata of society whether they live in plush subdivisions, slum areas or anywhere in between.

In fact, many of those who live in two storey houses in expensive real states with two or more cars in their garages found themselves perched on top of their roofs just like their poorer brothers and sisters.

So far, 100 persons were reported dead and more than half a million displaced.

The typhoon which dumped about a month's worth of rain in just nine (9) hours caught the national government by surprise. It is hardly able to rescue those who need to be rescued and can't cope up with the demand for food and medical assistance.

With so many people in need, it is hopeless to depend solely on the national government and all its agencies for support. Dominant media organizations (Radion, TV and Print) who can mobilize their resources are all busy doing what they can to help (spending their own money and soliciting and distributing relief goods) but even these can hardly be felt.

So, if you are an OFW (wherever you may be in the world) who has a relative in Metro Manila, or in any of the stricken areas, who is capable of sending any kind of assistance, this is a call for help.

You don't have to go beyond your relatives who are closest to you - if that is all that you can afford to do in such a short notice. But do help them. Send them any kind of assistance.

Everyone here is doing everything they can, but the relief organizations (Government or Private) may still be far away from where your relatives are - and there's another bad weather that seem to be almost in the same path as typhoon Ketsana.

Here's what's worrying some observers: another weather system in almost the same path as Typhoon Ondoy that might hit the country in just a few more days. Ondoy is the big round one on the left

Undoubtedly tough, my good punk, but gad you're a hard fellow to find nowadays, you flashed by and it's taken ages for me to find you again.

These crises are devastating and the loss of human life so tragic, and all I worry about is cars.

I stand, humbled.
