1 COUNTRY, 99 PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES
December 2nd 2009 07:37
Hmmmm… now, I am beginning to wonder if that’s the reason why people here keep saying we have the wrong president – no matter who becomes president.
But that figure is right. According to the Commission on Elections here in the Philippines, for the first time in its history, the number of people who filed their certificates of candidacy for president reached 99 in the last hours of the last day for filing of certificates of candidacy. That was yesterday.
Whew, I didn’t know we have that many comedians in this country!
How about a member of the “Transformers” for President?
Don’t laugh now, but these transformers are rather serious. Nope, they are not the same as those cartoon characters. These guys are for real. One was a former mayor of Olongapo City and another was a former mayor of Marikina City.
The former mayor of Olongapo City, Richard “Dick” Gordon later on became Chairman of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority. He moved on to become a senator and at the same time Chairman of the Philippine Red Cross, while the former mayor of Marikina City, Bayani Fernando until the day he filed his candidacy as Vice Presidential contender with Gordon as his President was the Chairman of the Metro Manila Development Authority.
Both pro-active and both very intelligent, they’ve shown brilliance in their endeavors. Separately, they’ve helped solve a lot of problems that beset this country. Based on what they have shown so far, there is no doubt that this country will benefit from their services.
Unfortunately, they are not the frontrunners in the 2010 Presidential race. Somebody who was describe by someone else as a man “whose remarkable contributions to the country were his unremarkable deeds” and on whose blood runs the legacy of two considered heroes of this republic is the one leading the surveys.
Those two former local chief executives just joined forces a day prior to their filing of certificates of candidacy. They do not have the backing of well oiled, huge political machinery like their rivals. They have very little resources. They are virtually unknown in the provinces. And to this day, they have no running political ads in the big radio and television networks.
Among the reasons, according to some observers, why they are on their own was their lack of chances of winning in the May elections. And the reason, those observers said, why they lack the chance to win was the duo’s lack of resources. Usual translation of “resources” of course is: goons, guns and gold.
Well, if the people who have the resources are like the suspects in the recent Maguindanao massacre, which killed 57 people including 30 journalists, the voters should better be giving candidates who lack the ”resources” more chances of winning on election day.
Here’s a related story. Really Long Link
